  1. To serve as a national network and clearinghouse for the discussion, dissemination, and exchange of ideas and information among African American state legislators and their staffs;
  2. To provide research, training, and educational services to African American state legislators and their staff.
  3. To improve the effectiveness and quality of African American state legislators; and

Porter 12Dear Colleagues:

It is my honor and privilege to greet you as the 12th President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL).  Our organization recently celebrated our 40th Annual Legislative Conference in New Orleans, page LA and walked away with different policy priorities that we will be committing ourselves to in the states.

NBCSL is an organization of nearly 700 black state legislators in 47 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  We represent hundreds of ideas, strategies, policies, and goals all dedicated to improving the lives of the millions of people we collectively represent.  For the newly elected, please think of NBCSL as a place where you can find like-minded individuals who have shared your struggles and your successes, and are also here to support you in your legislative journey.  For those returning, we welcome you back and call on you to lend your expertise and experience.  Together, we are facing a new legislative playing field, and it is up to us to ensure that our voices do not get drowned out and that we remain relevant in state and national conversations.

I look forward to working with all of you in setting an on-going agenda to address the disparities and inequalities that occur throughout all of our communities. Improving Financial literacy, renewable energy, wealth development, education, increasing access to technology and the 2020 Census are just a few areas that NBCSL will be spearheading under my administration.   We will be developing strategies and cultivating partnerships that will help us in these endeavors. We must be at the table, setting policy, which positively impacts the lives of our constituents

I am truly blessed to have been chosen to lead this incredible organization and look forward to working hard for you and our constituents.

Sincerely,

Gregory W. Porter (IN)
President, National Black Caucus of State Legislators
