Communications and Marketing Coordinator

The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) is an organization of over 700 state legislative members dedicated to improving the quality of life for African Americans and other disadvantaged individuals by taking appropriate legislative and administrative actions.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned as needed.


Communications and Marketing

  • Develop and directs strategic aspects of internal and external communications to align messaging while increasing visibility to effectively position the organization.
  • Recognize the target audience and formulates communications with regard to them.
  • Recommend and execute a marketing plan (including advertising activities) for service projects, advocacy awareness, special events, meetings and campaigns.
  • Serve as point of contact for media relations, develops press releases and coordinates media/press activities.
  • Serve as point of contact for creative agencies and provides creative direction on the production of print and digital collateral.
  • Coordinate interviews with media involving the leadership of the organization.
  • Assist with proofreading and editing all communication articles, as needed.
  • Formulate write-ups to be used in presentations.
  • Assist in implementing communications and marketing initiatives and disseminates information to areas and chapters.
  • Assist staff in writing and/or editing materials, documents and publications, as needed.

General Characteristics

  • Provide communication (email blasts, faxes, letters, memos) to Corporate Round Table, Labor Round Table and NBCSL members.
  • Update website material with articles; provide web scan to ensure that information on website is consistently up to date.
  • Conduct environmental scan of website and provide a 1-2 page report of findings on the website with suggested updates, outdated segments, errors, dead links and changes.
  • Prepare and disseminate press releases.
  • Maintain database.
  • Develop press releases, public statements and briefing packets.
  • Develop and maintain a press list to be used when sending out press releases.
  • Coordinate and develop relationships with members of the press.
  • Develop content for meeting packets when needed and prepare meeting packet.
  • Develop content and manage production of promotional products, including brochures, directories, Web pages, e-mail, newsletters, etc.
  • Provide exhibition and advertising sales and service – including market exhibit and advertising opportunities to potential customers other than CRT members, manage the selection of the show decorator, function as the on-site Exhibits Manager, manage corporate sponsorship as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Provide strategy, development, consulting and execution to bring all aspects of social media and traditional marketing efforts into alignment with unified goals and purpose.

  • Ability to tap into the pulse of target audiences in order to customize content and make it more effective.
  • Excellent analytical and observation skills.
  • A strong grasp on grammar, proactive writing, and fluency in English.
  • An excellent eye for detail in order to spot mistakes in written drafts.
  • Must be alert and quick to grasp the requirements of the information to be written.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Proven working experience in social media or related fields.
  • Demonstrable social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge.
  • Adequate knowledge of web design, web development, and SEO


Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, business administration, marketing or related field; English/literature or related field; or the equivalent in a combination of education and related experience.


Five (5) years of experience in public relations, media relations and/or communications.

Computer Skills

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Working knowledge of MS database system is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling.
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.

Other Requirements

Requires evening and weekend work schedules.
