Decision ensures millions of Americans will have access to affordable, quality care
The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling affirming the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. NBCSL President, Representative Barbara W. Ballard (KS), said, “Today represents a monumental feat in American history and a victory for the American people.”
The Affordable Care Act represented over 60 years of struggle to extend healthcare coverage to tens of millions of Americans without insurance due to age, poverty, employers that do not offer insurance, disability, or pre-existing medical conditions. The Affordable Care Act provides access to affordable, quality healthcare for all Americans. The Supreme Court’s decision ensures that insurance companies will no longer be able to deny an individual coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition or lack of work; insurance companies will no longer be able to charge women more than men; preventative care will be covered free of charge by insurance companies; seniors will pay less for prescriptions and checkups; and children can stay on their parents coverage until they reach 26 years old.
The National Black Caucus of State Legislators has been at the forefront of America’s journey to reform its healthcare system. Under the leadership of former NBCSL President, Representative Calvin Smyre (GA), NBCSL members unanimously passed a resolution calling for healthcare reform prior to the Affordable Care Act being enacted, and passed another resolution reaffirming support for the Act after it was signed into law on March 23, 2010. Current President, Representative Barbara W. Ballard (KS), has continued the charge on healthcare reform, meeting with President Barack Obama in 2011 and 2012 to discuss state partnership, and creating educational opportunities throughout her tenure for NBCSL members to learn how to successfully implement healthcare reform at the state level. The National Black Caucus of State Legislators remains committed to the Affordable Care Act and ensuring Americans get the access and care they deserve.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act ensures millions of Americans will have access to affordable, quality healthcare. This joyous outcome is truly a victory for the American people.
