(Atlanta, GA) State Representative Calvin Smyre (GA), President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) issues the following statement:
“The NBCSL mourns the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Haitian people after this catastrophic event. NBCSL has long supported efforts to improve the situation of Haiti through increased foreign aid, and the encouragement of business relations. In light of the recent tragedy, we must redouble our commitment to help with relief efforts, rebuild infrastructure and lay the foundation for a quick recovery.
Over the last few years, Haiti has experienced much instability from food shortages and natural disasters. Although the Haitian people are known for their strength and resilience, Haiti will require increased attention and aid going forward to recover from the cumulative effects of the past and the recent earthquake.
