NBCSL PRESIDENT BILLY MITCHELL ISSUES LETTER TO U.S. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN REQUESTING MEETING REGARDING UPCOMING VOTER SUPPRESSION LEGISLATION IN VARIOUS STATES

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, NBCSL President Billy Mitchell sent a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden requesting a meeting with him and staff to discuss the pressing matters regarding voter suppression legislation that is set to come up in many state legislatures at the beginning of the year.

NBCSL has been on the frontlines fighting to protect our democracy and standing strong in opposing voter suppression laws and the redrawing of legislative districts that seek to reduce political influence of Black Americans. Recently, NBCSL adopted a new Policy Resolution in support of “Protecting the Right to Vote for All Citizens.” This resolution urges the U.S. Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021.

“We are urging President Biden and the U.S. Senate to act now to protect our democracy,” said President Billy Mitchell, “We must protect our right to vote and honor those like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rep. John Lewis, and all those who came before us who marched and were beaten for the opportunity to cast their votes. As a nation, we have come so far, but we still have work to do. Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 will restore faith in our democracy and our voting system.”

NBCSL will continue its work to fight voter suppression by launching an aggressive campaign that will mobilize corporate resources to lobby the White House and U.S. Senate to create a carve-out in the Senate filibuster rules.
