The NBCSL President Laura Hall (Al) Released the Following Statement Regarding Scotus Ruling Against Affirmative Action
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Harvard University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s affirmative action program in a vote of 6-3 (UNC-Chapel Hill) and 6-2(Harvard).
President Laura Hall (AL) released the following statement in response to the ruling:
“I am deeply disappointed by today’s Supreme Court decision. This decision sets America’s clock back and serves as a disenfranchisement to black and brown students across this nation. Time after time the nation that declares that “all men are created equal” continues to demonstrate the complete opposite.
As an educator, I have seen firsthand how students of color have not received the same resources and support as their white counterparts. As a result, they may not be afforded the same opportunities. The dissolving of affirmative action programs sets precedence to black and brown students that they are not wanted at these institutions of higher education.
The NBCSL is committed to ensuring that every student has an equal opportunity in pursuing higher education at all institutions in the nation. We will continue to support our students, as we work with our state legislatures with higher education to create opportunities that will build more inclusive and diverse student bodies where all can thrive.”
