The National Black Caucus of State Legislators mourns the passing of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

The National Black Caucus of State Legislators mourns the passing of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., a towering leader in the fight for civil rights, voting rights, and human dignity across the United States and around the world.

For decades, Rev. Jackson was a trusted friend to NBCSL and a recipient of our highest honor, the Nation Builder Award—an acknowledgment of a life spent expanding justice, strengthening democracy, and advancing opportunity for Black communities and marginalized people. His work spanned three defining eras of American life: the Jim Crow period, the civil rights era, and the post–civil rights era. Throughout each, he remained a relentless voice for dignity, hope, and progress.

For state legislators across the nation, he represented the unwavering belief that progress is always possible. We are grateful for his lifelong commitment and for the profound impact he made on our organization, our nation, and the world. Today, we remember his most enduring call: “Keep hope alive.” May it continue to inspire leaders and communities for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and all who loved and were inspired by his life.

Rest in Peace.
