State of Alabama HB287 – Women’s Tribute Statue Commission to fund, commission, and place statues of Rosa Parks and Helen Keller on the State’s Capitol Grounds

Introduction

An Act, relating to historical monuments; to create the Women’s Tribute Statue Commission; to provide for the membership and duties of the commission; to provide for the termination of the commission; to require the Alabama Historical Commission and the Division of Construction Management of the Department of Finance to implement placement of the statues; and to provide that public and private funds, including in-kind services, may be used for the commission of the monuments. Additionally, December 1 has been designated Rosa Parks Day in the State of Alabama.


State Action

NBCSL member Rep. Laura Hall was very instrumental in getting this legislation passed through the Alabama House.  She is also an advocate for spreading the impact of Rosa Parks on a national level and encourages adoption of similar legislation across the United States.

Summary:  This bill would create a Women’s Tribute Statue Commission to fund, commission, and place statues of Rosa Parks and Helen Keller on the Capitol Grounds. The State of Alabama also designate December 1 as Rosa Parks Day.
