NBCSL mourns the passing of AALSCC past member and Louisiana Senate Staff Attorney J. Ashley Carter-Mitchell, Esq.

On behalf of our President, Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter (SC), NBCSL expresses its condolences to the family and friends  of J. Ashley Mitchell–Carter, Esq. who passed away over the Memorial Day weekend at the age of 34. Ashley was an active member of the African American Legislative Staff Coordinating Committee (AALSCC) and served as Staff Attorney on the General Government Affairs Committee at the Louisiana Senate.  A Louisiana State University graduate, Ashley received her Juris Doctorate from Southern University. Among all of these, she was a daughter, wife, and an expectant mother.  Her life was memorialized in a tribute presented on the floor of the Louisiana Senate by Senator Karen Carter Peterson (D).

To honor Attorney Jennifer Ashley Mitchell Carter, Class of 2011, and commemorate her life, work and service, her family is establishing a scholarship fund for deserving students of Southern University Law Center. This scholarship will be awarded to law students  who share and uphold the values that Ashley, a true lawyer leader, exhibited throughout her life and work.

Through this memorial scholarship, the family of J. Ashley Mitchell Carter remembers the spirit of headship, courage, and passion for her commitment to her community demonstrated by Ashley in a way that will promote the same qualities in others who will become attorneys of tomorrow. Thank you for your help and support. Your support in honoring Ashley will make a tremendous difference.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the J. Ashley Mitchell-Carter Scholarship Fund at jamcscholarship.com.  Donations may also be mailed to the Southern University Law Center at: Post Office Box 9294 Baton Rouge, LA 70813
