Maryland’s Senate Majority Leader Catherine Pugh Elected 11th President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators


Washington, DC - Maryland State Senate Majority Leader, Catherine Pugh will serve as the 11th National President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL), an organization that represents nearly 675 Black State lawmakers from 46 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She officially assumed her post on February 1, 2015 and will serve as president for the next two years.

Catherine Pugh holds an MBA from Morgan State University, receiving qualification from the University of California (Davis) as an Economic Development Specialist, and an Honorary Doctorate from Sojourner Douglass College. She has been a banker, business developer, Assistant Professor at Morgan State University, newspaper owner, Special Editor to the Baltimore Sun, Talk Show Host, Vice President of Brunson Communications overseeing 9 radio stations and the development of TV Channel 48 in Philadelphia, and Dean and Director of Strayer Business College.

In just 8 years, Senator Pugh has passed over 150 pieces of legislation including Broadband expansion, Medicaid Medicare coverage for Telemedicine, Minority Business Expansion, and compulsory attendance age to 18. Pugh’s legislative agenda is focused on improving the lives of all Marylanders and providing for diversity and inclusion in business opportunities throughout the state, including government.

Senator Pugh is the founder and chair of the Baltimore Design School, a public school for sixth through twelfth grade, and the founder of the Baltimore Marathon which is in its 15th year. She serves on several boards, including Council of State Governments, Maryland Economic Development & Business Climate Commission, and the University of Maryland Medical Systems.

A business woman; owner of a boutique; and President of CEPugh and Company, a marketing and public relations firm; she is also author of a series of children’s books: Healthy Holly and author of Mind Garden: Where Thoughts Grow - a collection of poems and proses.

Catherine Pugh has received numerous awards including the United States Small Business Advocate of the Year Award, Legislator of the Year Award from The Mental Health Association and NAACP, and The Benjamin L. Hooks Keeper of the Flame Award to name a few.

As President of NBCSL, Senator Pugh said, “My focus will be on transparency, growth, educating our members, and advocating on behalf of our community to ensure inclusion and diversity that results in the expansion and growth of African American businesses and the well-being of our communities.”
