NBCSL Mourns the Passing of Congressman Donald M. Payne

(Washington, DC) Representative Barbara W. Ballard (KS), President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) issues the following statement of mourning regarding the death of Congressman Donald Payne.

Today, I am immensely saddened to learn of the passing of Congressman Donald M. Payne. As the first African American Representative from New Jersey, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Payne was the definition of a public servant.

Congressman Payne worked tirelessly to strengthen education, promote workers’ rights, secure affordable health care, and protect human rights worldwide. He was an indefatigable champion for the poor and disadvantaged citizens of New Jersey, America, and the world.

Congressman Payne will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, constituents, and staff during this difficult time.
