NBCSL’s Statement on the Passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Washington DC The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) is saddened by the news of the passing of Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her children, Jane and James Ginsburg.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Ginsburg began her legal education at Harvard but ultimately graduated from Columbia Law School where she finished first in her class. After gaining experience with the American Civil Liberties Union as a volunteer advocate, Ginsburg was appointed to the United States District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia by Former President Jimmy Carter.
Her appointment to the United States Supreme Court by Former President Bill Clinton made her only the second woman to serve on our nation’s highest court.
Known for her colorful and scholarly dissents, as well as her advocacy for gender equality, Ginsburg is credited by many for inspiring the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which was signed into law by Former President Barack Obama.
