  • President Mary H. Coleman and Vice President Calvin Smyre visit the Dominican Republic to meet with officials and students participating in NBCSL’s student abroad program. The twenty-one students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Dominican Republic traveled and studied at the Pontificia Universidad Catholica Madre y Maestra through NBCSL’s International Technical Assistance Center (ITAC).
  • Fannie Mae sponsors sixth Housing Symposium in Washington, D.C.
  • NBCSL leaders meet in Naples, Florida to develop strategic plan to address Health Disparities.
  • NBCSL hires LaKimba DeSadier as the first female Executive Director (excluding the title Interim Executive Director).
  • NBCSL launches new website.
  • NBCSL and National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) kick off Closing the Achievement Gap campaign to address education issues in African American and Hispanic communities.
  • NBCSL and NHCSL meet in Boston, Massachusetts for second Health Disparities Conference sponsored by AstraZeneca.
  • Legislators convene for the 11th Annual Eli Lilly Health Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana to discuss mental health issues in children.
  • NBCSL hosts reception “A Salute to African American Elected Officials” in Boston, Massachusetts at the Museum of African American History. The museum was the site where one of the first African American regiments to fight in the Civil War first met.
  • Congressional Black Caucus honors fifteen NBCSL members for service during their Annual Legislative Weekend in Washington, D.C.
  • Legislators meet in New Orleans, Louisiana for Southern Regional Meeting to address HIV/AIDS and STDs through cooperative agreement with Centers for Disease Control.
