  • Georgia state Representative Calvin Smyre is elected NBCSL’s seventh president.
  • NBCSL and the National Medical Association continue their tradition of meeting to discuss health disparities and the way elected officials and medical practitioners can work together, this meeting is sponsored by Pfizer Inc.
  • Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe hosts NBCSL President Calvin Smyre, NBCSL Executive Director LaKimba DeSadier, National Conference Chair Tracy Steele and Arkansas Conference Chair Irma Hunter Brown at the Governor’s Mansion to discuss NBCSL’s 31st Annual Legislative Conference.
  • NBCSL Vice President, Barbara Ballard, NBCSL Education Chair Gregory Porter, Georgia State Representative Carolyn Hughley and NBCSL Division Director Atiba Madyun travel throughout Israel with a delegation of African American leaders and the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee to meet with members of the Israeli parliament, journalists, historians and other experts to learn about the Arab- Israeli conflict.

  • NBCSL, NHCSL and the Council of State Governments meet in Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Hilton Head, South Carolina as part of the Healthy States partnership to discuss public health issues.
  • NBCSL members tour city of New Orleans, Louisiana two years after the destruction from Hurricane Katrina.
  • NBCSL convenes 31st Annual Legislative Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. The 2007 National Nation Builder Award was given to former President William Jefferson Clinton.
