State of New York – SB S7196 : Gun Industry Accountability Act | Sen. Zellnor Myrie (NY)
Back to Model Legislation
Committee of Jurisdiction: Law, Justice, and Ethics (LJE)

Introduction

While gun violence rages in our communities, disproportionately impacting Black and Brown people, the billionaire corporate titans at the top of the gun industry have been shielded from liability because of a 2005 federal law. In 2021, New York became the first state to enact a law that allows irresponsible and reckless gun companies to be sued for damages in civil court. Since New York’s law took effect, seven other states (CA, CO, DE, HI, IL, NJ and WA) have followed suit, creating a real measure of accountability for an industry that has escaped any responsibility for the harms caused in communities of color by its products and business practices.
