It has long been the tradition of the House that the Clerk appoints the most senior member to bring down the gravel to officially begin the two-year session.
For the opening of the 123rd Legislative Session, as appointed by House Clerk Charles Reid, District 66 Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter presided over the South Carolina House of Representatives. The House 2019-2020 Organizational Session opened at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2018.
First elected in January 1992, Representative Cobb-Hunter is currently the longest serving member of the House. Also, she is the longest serving African-American member in the history of the South Carolina House of Representatives. She is the longest serving female member in the history of the South Carolina House of Representatives.
Her seniority in the House is historic for our community. says District 70 Representative Wendy Brawley.
Adding to her long list of major career accomplishments, Representative Cobb-Hunter was recently been elected as the 13th President of NBCSL and will take office January 1, 2019.
