FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 8, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC-Today, NBCSL President Billy Mitchell released the following statement regarding the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson:

“I am delighted to have witnessed the confirmation of the first African American woman to serve as a Justice in the United States Supreme Court. Today, this nation has reached a milestone in its history. We applaud the Biden Administration for their leadership during this nomination process and we applaud the Senate for doing the necessary work to confirm Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

As I reflect on the history made today, I cannot help but reminisce on the journey we as African Americans have been on in this country. I am grateful now that we have overcome and have prevailed in this nation and now, we have two African Americans justices, three justices of color, and forty women justices serving on the bench. Justice Brown Jackson is standing on the shoulders of giants like Justice Thurgood Marshall, Representative Shirley Chisholm, Mary McCleod Bethune, Harriett Tubman, and other African Americans leaders.

NBCSL congratulates Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on this career high and major success. We stand with her as she takes her place on the bench in the highest court in the nation. She belongs there and we are glad she achieved this great honor.”
